When I was growing up, things were a lot different. Even though the “sexual revolution” of the 60s and 70s had occurred, our small town was still very conservative. The communication gap between the adults and kids was still very wide. The ability to get useful information about our bodies was limited to rumors and our frugal old gym teacher. This allowed for the use of our vivid imaginations when dealing with these matters.
We used to swim in the pool at Jennies house. One day we noticed that Jennie’s older brother and his friends were laughing at us girls in the pool. Not knowing why, we tried to find out. After much ado, the boys told us that Ricky had masturbated in the pool. This caused much commotion as jenny jumped out of the pool swearing she was now pregnant. We didn’t think it was so, but we couldn’t be sure.
Looking back, it would have been nice to have a reliable source of information about sex I try to talk about it openly with my daughters. I did use a website called healthguru.com, to help illustrate and explain some topics with them. Looking at it together, we were able to eliminate some of the embarrassment that goes along with the subject. It worked out nicely and helped to bring us closer.
Anyway, things are a lot better these days as the kids have access to more information. It’s great to able to use the internet to solve some of the problems of the day. I almost forgot, Ricky got in a lot of trouble!
