The Hardest Time
Tuesday, February 24th, 2009 | Author: Jackie

One of my girlfriends called the other day with urgent news. There was a sale at our local grocery store on pot roast!

I hurried down to find that, indeed there was. At a dollar sixty-six a pound, around here that is definitely a great price. I greedily grabbed up my share and headed home reflecting on my good fortune. Still being early in the day and deciding to start the process of cooking my prize without delay, I cut up the potatoes and onion. I stirred in the carrots and some mixed vegetables and topped it all off with a pot roast packet, as well as some salt and pepper.

Now begins the hardest time. The waiting.

They don’t call it a slow cooker for nothing. In this day and age of fast food and microwaves, the slow cooker is absolutely the turtle in the race. Nevertheless, I went on with my daily routine and returned every so often to check on its progress. The wonderful aroma filled the house and flamed my desire to dig into the delicious concoction I had assembled. Still, with at least two more hours to go, my hunger drove me to begin checking its readiness at shorter and shorter intervals. The waiting was becoming intense. I stirred the pot hoping that it would cook faster. I tested the vegetables with little bites. I made all the preparations to ensure that once ready there would be not a moment’s delay. Any minute now!

I used the ladle to fill up my bowl – no knife needed. The meat melts in your mouth. The baby carrots are perfection. I rush back to the pot for a second helping. Aaah!

Was it worth it?  Darn right!

Get off my nerves!

As the weather has been really cold lately and the kids have been stuck in the house. They are constantly fighting and it’s really starting to get on my nerves. I been bombarded with shouts of “Mom, Sarah won’t give me back my phone” and the ever famous “I’m telling mom on you” I feel like I need a whistle and a striped shirt!!

It seems that no matter how many times I scold them or separate them, they are right back at each others throats. The whole thing is causing me to become pretty fed up with the situation and I’m gonna start busting some heads together pretty soon!! I’ll sure be glad when the weather breaks and the kids can argue outside!!

My sister sent me this video, and I think it applies! Hope you like it too!

Good Fences

Know the old saying, “Good fences make good neighbors”?

Stand at the left side of my house and walk ten paces and you will smack into my neighbor’s house. Start at the right side and walk ten paces, you’ll run straight into my other neighbor’s house. Look out the back window and you will see what Joe and Barb are grilling for dinner.

When I go out to get the paper from the driveway, there’s a wide variety of sights to see. I can sneak a peek at who’s in the pool of the corner house, glance at the dog locked in his kennel beside the garage across the street, or give a friendly wave to the newlyweds – who are incessantly fighting.

Isn’t America great! Here we are, all the people cozy as peas in a pod. I often have occasion to see them come and see them go, as I wander out to grab a smoke. The dog-walkers, joggers, and mailbox checkers, not to mention the little kids with their big wheels, the medium kids on bikes, and the older kids who walk around like a pack of hyenas.

This neighborhood is busier than Central Station. And to think we moved out to the suburbs to get away from the big-city crowd. I guess our land is filling up. Gone are the days of wide-open spaces and green pastures. Gone are the forests but for one tree in each yard. Gone are the days when you could own all the land as far as you could see. Gone are the days…

Like the sign says “give us your huddled masses” well, they’re here.

A little extra…

These days, every little bit of extra money you can get is essential. We found a great way to get back some of the money we spend. Being as though the kids drink a lot of soda, and my boyfriend drinks a lot of beer, we use a lot of aluminum cans.

I used to throw them into the recycle bin, (after all, we’re trying to save the environment!) but nowadays I save them up. I learned that you can take your cans to the scrap yard and get paid. It’s true that it takes a lot of cans to make it worth it, but, every penny helps!!

Valentine’s Day Blues

This morning I woke up as sick as a dog!  My whole day is shot.  We were planning on getting a babysitter and going out for a romantic dinner; just the two of us.  But now I’ll be spending the day in bed, and not in the way I had expected!

Well, my boyfriend is glad that he is saving money on NOT having to wine and dine me, but he is not off the hook yet.  He still had better bring me a card, some heart shaped candy, and some flowers!  And maybe even a pretty little heart shaped necklace.
